What is the Iconic Malcolm X Hat?

A. History of the Design

The Malcolm X hat became a piece of Black American history when it was first introduced by Spike Lee during his release of the movie Malcolm X. in the early 1990s. The design was created to promote education regarding the late Black Empowerment leader and activist, Malcolm X. The following quote from the VP of Spike Lee's Production Company stated:

“Spike was trying to make people aware of how great this man was,” says Jeffrey Tweedy, vice president of Forty Acres and a Mule, “not start a fashion trend.”

The hat quickly gained popularity among Black people looking to make a statement and has remained a reminder of Malcolm X's passionate push for change and demand for results.

While there are many designs and colors for the hats, the hat’s original design was simple yet effective - a black flat cap with a thin brim, usually made from wool or tweed. The original features the famous “X” logo, which was the letter Malcolm used in-lieu-of the name given to his family by slave masters.

About Malcolm X

Malcolm X was born Malcolm Little on May 19th, 1925 in Omaha, NE to Earl and Louise Little. He came to prominence as a Minister of the Nation of Islam where his intellectual and uncompromising positions on Black Empowerment stunned the nation and gained him much favor and acclaim. While many did not agree with his staunch advocacy for Black self-sufficiency at the time, the Present has now vindicated this wise man. Change starts with us and we will not see the results we require until we follow Malcolm X's wise words of doing for self.

Malcolm is survived by his 6 daughters who have gone on to make a legacy in their own right. Ilyasah Shabazz is an award winning author, speaker, and educator who is continuing in the footsteps of her mighty father.
