In an emergency, fire is just as vital as water. Here is a basic fire kit that you can easily put together, and it will cost you next to nothing (all of this stuff can be found at a dollar store if you don't already have it at home):

I keep my kits in a Ziploc bag, but any small bag/pouch will do.

  • Cigarette lighter
  • Small 32-count boxes of matches
  • Tealight candles
  • Magnesium fire starter (Walmart)
  • Cotton & wax fire starters

A couple recipes for cotton fire starters:

Survival Fire Starter - Vaseline Cotton Balls

Put your cotton fire starters in a small container inside your fire kit.
