I mentioned before that I am hoping to get my own spot and put money down on a house next year. I have been looking into options and talking to some real estate people. I don't have a lot of stuff but looking around, I feel like I am going to be so overwhelmed when I move. Does anyone have experience with moving a full place worth of stuff to a new spot? I am looking for some tips, tricks, and hacks to make the process easier.

    • Clear out your closets, drawers, cabinets, etc before you start moving
      • Sell everything you don’t need
      • Throw away or donate everything you can’t sell
      • Don’t bring stuff you don’t use to your new place
    • Pack everything up, make it nice and neat, and write the room it belongs to on the box
    • Hire movers
    • Have the movers bring everything to the new place and place all the boxes in the appropriate rooms
    • Unpack everything, even if you’re tired…don’t leave boxes packed because they’ll stay that way

You must have a great group of friends if they are providing appliances. My friends would bring me a bottle of wine.

Whenever I've moved, I try to stay organized with boxes and mark them with what room they should go in. It makes it easier if you can kind of have everything in the general area it belongs to when you go to unpack. I hope that when I move next time, I can get into the new place a couple of days early, so I don't have to do everything in one day.

I always negotiate this. I like to get my keys 2 days early so that I can move over the course of 3 days. I usually move all the small things on my own and have movers come and bring bed, couch, tV, fridge, stove, etc.

Thanks for the tips so far, keep them coming!

I already got some of those plastic bins (18 gal) from Walmart. I think I paid like $45 for 8 of them. Figured I could use those in place of boxes and have them for storage after the fact instead of buying boxes that will just be thrown away. I am guessing I will need at least another 16 more to fully pack everything. I am thinking of just putting clothing, sheets, towels, etc. in double-bagged garbage bags or I will invest in those plastic ikea style moving bags.
