It not only shows how much value whiteness has to them but also how much they devalue blackness. They have internalized the culture of white supremacy and so a white man with nothing is more valuable than a black man of even greater stature. Many Black men who she had dated in the past probably were hard workers but once again their skin tone caused her to devalue them. She will learn in the end hopefully she will live to tell about it.
