Crazy and interesting story. This takes place in Long Beach, Ca (shout out to Jay). Brotha grew up as part of the East Side Longos, Mexican gang and eventually went to their rivals Insane Crips. The story is fascinating.

I got lotsa LA stories myself, large and small. One time coming from the club at about 2am, 3am on Florence Blvd, a couple Mexicans were pushing a car. I slowed up and they drawed down on me, lol...offered to push the car to a gas station a couple blocks away.

I didn't have an "LA accent" but at that time a pronounced east coast accent. Anyway, stupid of me, but I'm at my heart, a person who helps, I got them there and dude was like 'My name is ****, ese, if you ever get jammed up by anyone in my hood, mention my name' I forgot the name now, but I remembered it for a while.

A few times I could easily have been shot, wrong place, wrong time. Usually my accent and mentioning my east coast city got me out of 99 percent "Where you from, Crip?" or 'Where you from, Ese?' or "Where you from, Blood?" interactions.

To be fair, visa versa. I've seen non Blacks who have nothing but black homies and take on our mannerisms.

There was an Asian DJ in LA on the radio back in the day, that if you heard him you thought he was black.

I worked in Korea for a minute and had this Korean gf (yeah, yeah...so what..lol..sistas still my preference) and I picked up a lot of Korean. I'm a pretty good mimic, not a comedian but I can do some impressions, so I got a decent ear for accents, etc. and my Korean friends would call and I would answer in Korean obviously and they thought they had the wrong number. expecting to hear an American. Best compliment I got that I had it down. When I visit LA I like to trip the Korean store owners out asking for shyt in Korean "Ajoshi.....mool jusayoh? (yeah, I'm showing off..lol) and they would crack up and 99.99 percen of the time ask if I was former military since America got about 25,000 military personnel there.

Real talk. I tried lowkey hollaring at 2 sistas, one of them I saw as wifey, deep south girl, you could tell raised right, had both parents, had a sweet deep south disposition but unfortunately she got caught up with the feminist sisters. Coincidentally, how I came at her was on some black empowerment ish, I met up to loan her Hidden Colors I and II. We met up to talk about it, etc and she started with this 'Black men haven't been able to protect us' and stuff like that and I was like 'I'm good' Stayed cordial. The other one was my type physically, Canadian, west African descent, but moved like 'us' meaning black American culturally. But wasn't ready for anything serious at that time. The Korean chick wasn't the mousy type, had some backbone to her, but eventually we both knew it wasn't going anywhere long term. For me, an added incentive was how much of the language I was picking up and it made the consulting I was doing at the time way easier with the Korean clients. And the first one still single....

Wasn't it though? Cali brothers, especially brothers from Long Beach or Carson area, but there are Cambodian and Pacific Islander crips who have their own crip sets and sound Black when you hear them. I heard what I thought was a brotha once on another aisle in Carson and saw some big ass Somoan guy. This was during my first few months working in Cali.
