I agree with the older Black male, but Black people need to be careful with how we use all words in general. #VGQ

Sometimes, but it is not being used as much nowadays. Was in common usage, these days, not so much. The sooner the word is no longer used, the better. #VGQ

It's been stated that the English language is a language of "spell casting" many of the root words are found in Latin or from various languages originating in Europe. Being proficient is knowing and never a bad thing. βœŠπŸΏπŸ’―β—οΈ

A lot of slavery related words were normalized in the islands. For example, American slaves said massa for master, the Islands said mass like in the catholic mass. To this day folks would say as a term of respect to an older person, an elder named Paul for example 'Mass Paul'. More in the country sides and not as much anymore.

Some black American words have African roots as well. Some are possibly. Like Sambo, Banjo,

English words of African origin - Wikipedia

I like to study a bit of etymology here and there and there are words directly from Ashanti (Ghana), Ibo and other west African words List of Jamaican Patois words of African origin - Wikipedia . Most of it Ghanian in large part because the biggest British slave port was in Ghana (Cape Coast) and they fought a war against the British in the 1700s and they sent the POWs to the American slave ports (Charleston) and the Islands, especially Jamaica who their Maroons were mostly derived from. There is a Caribbean folk tale similar to the Briar Rabbit tales (African origin I think), about a mischievous spider named Miss Anansi.
Anansi is directly derived from an Ashanti tale. The Akan (Ashanti people) word for spider is Aanansi. In the movie American Gods they had a famous clip about it.
