i see.believe me. i know full well how black people rely too much on symbolism instead of substance.but consider that sometimes changing your name and/or how you view yourself can be the beginning of changing on the inside as well. Throughout the bible, God changed names before that person had done anything noteworthy. they had to shake off the old name and everything that came with it and what better way to do that than with a new name. so it depends on the person i think.
