A Black-owned museum here in the Los Angeles area had a Jazz night and I wanted to share some of the original imagery they had on display. It’s horrifying to see how they depicted us in the marketing. I spoke to the curator, yes this museum has a curator and I’ll will be setting up an interview with him soon.

Share with us your findings. I am sick of us being negatively portrayed.

It was all historical with a huge minstrel section.

Fantastic. I never appreciated Jazz until I went to the deep south.
Seems like Blacks don't really appreciate jazz until we are older.
I can't think of too many teens or early 20s brothers or sisters growing up that were into jazz other than people who were musicians. My homie played the trumpet since elementary school and liked it but that's about it.

It's an original black form of music I hope we not just preserve but teach its history to all young people so they can carry on its preservation and appreciation.

I think it also depends how the parent introduces it to the child. My son is 7 and he loves Traditional, Contemporary, and Smooth Jazz. It wouldn’t be his first choice to listen to though.

To me, Jazz is complex and for intelligent mental “palates”.

The museum had all types of that artwork and had originals from the Coon Chicken Inn. It was disgusting. But we don't need to destroy the pictures. We need every Black person to see it so that they understand where we came from and take a vow to never allow it to happen again.

I was lucky enough go to one of the best music schools in the country (but to me it was a commuter school). any given night was some sort of jazz combo at a coffee shop, in the student union, or at a house party. I was even lucky enough to take a history of jazz class for one of my humanities credits. New York and New Orleans are historically two of my favorite cities just based on the strength of being the birthplace of hip hop (NYC) and the birthplace of Jazz (NOLA). David Simon is low key a culture vulture but that show TREME is his best work in my opinion. But Jazz history is Black history which is American history, which is also hip hop history.
