I think a big part of what puts people off (non-black) from reparations is the fact that most people bring it to the table as a means that ALL non-blacks should pay to black Americans. I think we could get a more strong voice and movement if we target the right people. Not all white people in America owned slaves. It was the rich that did. It was the ones that owned farm land that did. These are the families that have had generational wealth off the backs of black American's ancestors and these are the people who should be paying out those reparations. The Biden family owned slaves. The Bush family owned slaves. It seems most wealthy politicians had family that owned slaves. A lot of corporations were started off the backs of slaves and those owners had plenty of them on their land. These are the same people that are known for evading taxation. The same people that are known for using the system to advance. The same people that want to keep black people in poverty.

I am a fairly realistic and rational person. I know black people have never been treated fairly by the system but I also know who runs this system and who benefits the most from it. The families that have hoarded their wealth for generations all had a lot of slaves and most of them DID NOT want to give them up.

If we target the people most at fault, the ones that benefited the most, I think we stand a better chance at actually getting our people what they are owed. I come from a family of immigrants so I won't be owed anything but I want the families that suffered for decades and still suffer to be owed what they were promised.

Well reparations is a claim that will be paid by the government, so every tax payer technically will be paying us, just like our taxes go towards Ukrainians and illegals. Furthermore if you're white you benefited from slavery in 1 way or another, whether they realize it or not, so....

Reparations is a debt owed to the descendants of black Americans. Just like our government paid reparations for Japanese Americans and Jewish Americans, it will come from the U.S. government. They got the funding...

When you say “WE stand a better chance at getting OUR people what they are owed”, then say ”I come from a family of immigrants”, that makes no sense.
OUR people are people descended from American chattel slavery.
Our ancestors were NOT immigrants.

I think it'd be a good start to focus on the rich elites who probably have some relatives who were slave owners. I'm sure there's a high chance that a lot of these rich families have ties to slavery and owning slaves. Especially if they've held onto their wealth since the days of slavery. There is bound to be a few celebs who probably have a really shady family history. I think they should be responsible for reparations, or at least the start of them.

The government (local, state, federal) and any of the elite and institutions that were built from slavery (numerous universities, banks, hospitals, prisons, Wall Street, corporations, etc) all owe us reparations. Though the government and its branches need to be focused on the most.

I second starting it with the gov, banks, and other such institutions that have hurt us in the past.

It would be nice to get reparations from those families that supported slavery back in that time, but it'd be tough to get them and they may bring up some ethical issue like them not being responsible for their relatives past actions.

So yeah, starting with the establishments that kept us down, would be the way to go. Maybe even include political groups as well.

Everyone benefitted from the system of slavery here in the USA. The reason the country is an economic powerhouse is directly due to hundreds of years of slaver labor. There’s a reason why British came here after 1776 instead of to Jamaica, there’s a reason why Portuguese came here instead of to Angola, or French to Senegal and it’s because it was rich AF off slavery. Everyone has to pay and that’s why it needs to come right from the federal government.

If the feds need to recoup their losses they can reach out to the families and corporations they were in bed with in the whole slavery debacle.

I think the timing of this post is disrespectful. MLK said " We are coming to DC for our check." Period. We should not and most of us do not care how poor whites feel about it because though they may not have owned, they benefited from the owning. I don't think we have the time for dual allegiances.

The very valid argument I've always heard and can't be countered and others have alluded to is the American government allowed slavery. Everyone then and up to now benefited from that.

After WW2, everyone said Germany had to pay. The NAZI government did the holocaust. The government after WW2 were not Nazis. These were made up of people who were opposed to the Nazis, typically called the Adenauer era because he was the Chancellor from 1949 to 1963. The US supported the payment of reparations from a Government that had NOTHING to do with the Holocaust. In fact, Konrad Adenauer was a victim of the Nazis, his bank account froze and dismissed as mayor of Cologne. But he and his party paid reparations. So, if a government who had nothing to do with the Holocaust paid reparations, what argument do whites (and others) have from this form of government that hasn't changed since the country's founding?

And for those who say "I didn't own slaves and only 5% of whites in the south had slaves, why should I pay in my tax dollars". Blacks didn't intern the Japanese or engage war on the natives either, but black tax dollars went to it. In fact, black tax dollars went to natives that enslaved them.

There is no argument white folks (or others) can come up with not to pay FBAs reparations. There are precedents already. I had this discussion with a white boy once, an alt right one from the south, and he got shut down and changed the subject.

Lastly, the US government paid reparations to the slave owners. To add salt to the wounds. These are counter arguments ALL blacks should be employing if they need to defend reparations for FBAs.

My parents weren't brought here through slavery. That is what I am mentioning so I would not qualify for reparations. My family has not even been in America for 60 years.

I dont understand why YT ppl get upset by this running debt that is clearly OWED. True all YT ppl didn't' own slaves but they "ALL" benefitted from this WS system put in place. We need to add "Tax Exempt" for both property and paper funds be enacted.

Whites as a collective are worse than bullies. Imagine someone being obsessively jealous of and threatened by you for whatever reason, and not only do they become your primary bully, but they are also able to effectively turn everyone against you with their power, charm, social status, lies, rumors, and slander. Now you are the most unpopular and hated person in the entire town to the point that no one will even hire, hang around or trust you. You become an undesirable cancer to them to where even property values will decline if you were to even walk past them. You are forced to accept your societal fate of worthlessness to that of a leper or a pariah.

They couldn't care less if you live or die (as long as you aren't in their sight or don't surpass them in any way) and don't even want you to exist. And whenever people out there are like "hey, I'll befriend, take pics with, give $5 to or say hi to this leper", then you are pressured, shamed, and expected to forever be grateful and indebted to these "kind souls" because in their eyes, you really deserve nothing. This is what is and has been happening Black people on a massive scale across the entire planet for far, far too long.

Would be nice to see slave owners families pay up, but we all know that's not going to happen. But I do think we could make some headway in the government to get some sort of reparations started. They could for sure do more to get those reparations started for us.

It's not like I need a ton of money, just something to give back to us for what our relatives and ancestors went through. Didn't they give some reparations to Native American Indians? Why not us too?
