The mother of 13-year-old Karon Blake, who was shot dead in Northeast D.C. on Jan. 7, plans to address the media Wednesday afternoon.

Legally parents can be for things like gross neglect if, for example, they leave a loaded gun out and the kid gets it and kills someone with it .

So, yes, from a legal standing, depending on the circumstances, as well as yes, strictly from a public opinion perspective if they created an environment and raised the kid in a way where they are likely to be bad. For example, sometimes the school bully has a father that encourages it.

Under a certain age, absolutely. I think 13 is over that limit. I feel like a 13 year old is old enough to make stupid decisions and do dumb things no matter what the parent says or does. It is hard. Some kids are still very young at 13 while others are acting like they are 20 years old.

From a legal perspective absolutely. But I think the cut off should be 16. At 16 you're old enough to obtain employment without your parents permission (albeit limited hours) and obtain a license to drive legally without a parent in the car with you. So if you are given the two most basic adult responsibilities at 16, then it should apply across the board as it pertains to untoward behavior.

Parents are responsible until the child is an adult. They're responsible for Grandchildren as well, if the parents are unavailable or incarcerated also.

So if a 17 year old (not a legal adult) decides to get a gun off the street and rob a bank, the parent should be the one that goes to prison?

I think when it comes to care and providing protection, absolute the parent is responsible but if you have a kid that is going off the rails and you are working a full-time job, how you meant to make sure they stay out of trouble 24/7. Especially today. Kids are getting dumber and even if you have a great kid, they could easily be manipulated by someone else's kid into doing something stupid.

My eldest daughter was 13, when she thought she'd keep the money I gave her & steal.
When the police brought her to my door, I told them to take her to Juvenile Hall. After that weekend there, she NEVER stole again, while living under my roof.

That is how you handle it. You make them see the consequences of their actions young enough that they don't want to make the mistake again.
