Depression is a defense mechanism gone awry.It is an illusion. We unconsciously create standards or ideals for ourselves we believe we should live up to (for our survival) then we hate ourselves for not living up to them. And of course, the standards are not fixed in reality so they change over time and our ideas of what actions/outcomes meet those standards also change. So depression arises when we don't hit a moving target that is in constant fluctuation.Depression is also an addiction. We get addicted to thoughts that hurt us, which makes it that much more difficult to overcome.Really, the only difference between a depressed person and a not depressed person is whether or not the person habitually tells themselves they are hitting the target. Completely arbitrary.
