Crows, ravens, and the like are all HIGHLY intelligent. Did you see those videos where they trained them to recycle? I can't remember what channel it was on but they will pick up bottle caps and similar things and bring them to a recycling unit for a reward. It is crazy! They can talk too.

I loved this video and show it to people regularly. I don't see how humans can believe that we are unique on this planet. I fully believe that the bird understood what it said. It was said at the right time and in context. Corvids are smart, vindictive, protective, and loyal.

There's a vast gulf. The crow doesn't understand "why". Their training is a simple logic loop:

If I do x, then y.

Most animals are reward seekers. Police dogs WANT to bite people and see it as a reward.

I actually used to want one as a pet but because of their intelligence, they tend to not be ideal to keep. If they are bored or understimulated, they become very destructive. I wouldn't mind befriending a wild one if given the chance though.
