Kanye West no longer a billionaire after Adidas cuts ties: Forbes

Forbes estimates West’s new net worth at just $400 million.

Adidas AG plans to end its partnership with Kanye West following a rash of offensive behavior from the rapper and designer that turned a once-thriving shoe brand into a lightning rod for criticism.

The German sports company may announce the move as early as Tuesday, according to people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified because discussions are private. A representative for Adidas didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

Adidas would join Gap Inc. and Kering SA’s Balenciaga fashion label in cutting ties with West, who now goes by Ye. The rapper has made controversial statements, including antisemitic social media posts in recent weeks, and has moved to cut ties with his corporate partners. Ye couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

They’re not. The USA is in love with the term “valuation” because it allows them to be trifling under the guise of “doing business”.

The average person usually sees this in the residential real estate market. You buy a house for $300k and for some reason unbeknowst to you the value continues to grow. You owe the bank $300k + interest but your house is worth $400k so you feel comfortable that you can sell it at anytime.

We’ll assume you own nothing else so your net worth we’ll say is $100k. You don’t have $100k in the bank but if we had to liquidate everything you’d probably have that in your hand.

Now for some reason the market tanks and your house’s value goes from $400k to $200k…now your net worth went from $100k to negative $100k overnight. Because if we sold your house you’d still $100k to the bank.

That’s why valuations are trash and why the whole “so and so is a billionaire” is hot garbage most of the time. They most like own some percentage of a company that is assumed to be worth some amount if it sold.

If Kanye owns 50% of the shares of a company “worth” $2B he is now a “billionaire” yaaaay. What happens if that company has a bad season and the value plummets 50%? Guess who is no longer a billionaire? Nothing changed, the money in the bank is the same it’s all speculative.
