I love, love, love, love books.

I know you didn't mention books but I still have a library in my house and I add to it one at a time. After The Bible, I read The Celestine Prophecy and my library grew from there.

Like Blu-rays, DVDs, albums (CDs, Cassette tapes, vinyl, etc), Video games, and more. Do you still collect physical media like that? Or have you mostly moved on to digital streaming and digital downloads instead? Lately I haven't bought much physical media, in fact I kinda want to get rid of some stuff as I want to clean up my house a bit. I don't listen to CDs, tapes, or even buy blu-ray movies anymore. I found that just watching the movies I liked digitally is a lot more practical.

But, I still am a collector, so I will often buy stuff from thrift stores and stuff like that. I'll still pick up retro games and stuff like that.

I have a large collection of CDs but they stop at around 2008. That's when I got a minidisc player and started to burn MP3s.

With AV1 compression being the best for streaming and general lightweight videos, I can see many websites offering a YT alternative. Places that give Whites Supremacists a way to gather and talk.

OTOH, when Apple got the music companies to sell on iTunes, Google wanted a music video deal. Google got it with VEVO. The smaller YouTube alternative sites can be sued out of business for music copywrite violations.

So, the smaller "tube sites" cannot draw the eyes like YouTube can. In the end it's a site that has content makers trying to get eyes but are struggling and eventually the tube site will lose out.

I'm really tired and I hope this came out readable...

I see what you are saying. Sites like this are a dime a dozen and only get traction with hate groups or conspiracy groups that use it but once they stop, they fizzle out and disappear. It is a shame.

That’s the tough part. WHY TF would anyone go on an alternative site when YouTube has everything already? To compete with YouTube you have to play in a sustainable niche that they aren’t in already. That’s one of my concerns with this site, I hope Jay is working on the value prop and how this site is different that other forums and social media.

There are other ways but the overhead capital is too much for an average company. The music industry are whores to cash. They will make a deal with any "tube site" if they get paid.

Once you lock down "protection" from the music biz, that opens the door to other things.

I ask because I am bummed all the way out...
I just took the CompTIA A+ Core 1 exam and failed and would like to know if anyone is familiar with obtaining Information Technology certifications?
And if you are; do you know if CertMaster (Learning program issued by the CompTIA) is worth it for learning the objectives?

Yes, we want to be an all around resource for Black people we just need to get our numbers up.

Don't worry getting the certs is a challenge and you will not always pass. The last cert I got was MEF CECP 3.0 and it wasn't easy...had to study hard. This course is highly rated:

    TOTAL: CompTIA A+ Certification (220-1001).

Course 1: Everything you need to pass the A+ Certification Core 1 (220-1001) Exam, from Mike Meyers and Total Seminars.
    www.udemy.com

You should check it out and see if you like it. The benefit of going with CertMaster is that your curriculum will always be up to date. Sometime when you use 3rd parties the data is wrong which is an issue I had using Toshiba materials to get MEF certs.

@TheHarmattan what do you have to add?

Nice! I don't know you from a can of paint, bruh, so I'm not coming at you personally.

Why do you want to get into the field? Do you like solving problems, tinkering or are you looking at this for a money bag? Only you know the answer.

I struggled with maths early on so make sure you have solid math skills then you should enter "The Matrix".

The Matrix I'm talking about is understanding the system from an abstract place and not system specific. The realities are opposite from the everyday world to real system administration. On the consumer side, everyone is Team Apple or Team MS. In The Matrix those two teams take a backseat to real computing.

I've worked at IBM and Dell and if you don't understand FreeBSD, HP-UX, AIX and Linux, you're simply not going to make it. Linux is everywhere now and if you don't have a Linux box yet, you are far behind the curve already. It may sound corny but you need to have that adventurist spirit in the field to be equipped for real world problems in real time.

Facebook uses Linux, Netflix uses FreeBSD because nobody does networking like FreeBSD, not even Linux. The money is out there and getting certified is not easy as @Jay said, but it will be worth it.

I am a Red Hat Certified Engineer, I maintain a Linux kernel for my in-house projects and I am a Swahili translator for the GNOME Desktop Environment (Which is a complete mess right now).

I'd be happy to help you in any way that I can.

Absolute facts. You will see me and this guy go back and forth about Mac but I was a web developer for 10 years and everyone that was anyone used LAMP stacks not WIMP. Understanding Unix-like systems is important, I’m not an expert like Harmattan but win vs Mac is surface level.

Absolute facts. You will see me and this guy go back and forth about Mac but I was a web developer for 10 years and everyone that was anyone used LAMP stacks not WIMP. Understanding Unix-like systems is important, I’m not an expert like Harmattan but win vs Mac is surface level.

I am not an expert on any level. I am really passionate about using computing to help my Black People do whatever they want to do.

Bjarne Stroustrup used to live down the road from me but no expert here. 😂👌

    Appreciate the responses, I wasn't available after watching Porter🥊 vs Crawford🥊 🥊.

As for the back and fourth between @Jay and @TheHarmattan ; I'm just a fish egg in this Tech Ocean. Software Dev, Linux and other things that I didn't understand went right over my head. However upon getting started I will keep those things in mind down the road.
Right now I'm trying to get my feet wet with A+ N+ and S+ over the next few years before I began to look at cloud computing or cyber security or whatever other encrypted data you two were talking about.

And @TheHarmattan I have been/still am terrible at math, I'm in Khan academy for math; hopefully my progression will improve my analytical skills.
And as far as my purpose (Money, Tinkering, Problem Solving) - It's all of the above. MIS is what i'm majoring in at the moment.

MIS is very good. You can branch off into user experience and other forms of graphical user interfaces.

Just don't get trapped into the MS or Apple bubble because that is when you limit your career. Untangling people's crappy spyware laden systems is in your future if you do.

Find a Linux distro and manage that so that you will be comfortable for the heavy stuff later on. It's free!

There is a lot of stuff going on here:

    • A+ - The guy who shows up when Gretchen's signature ain't showing up in Outlook
    • N+ - Guy who works at a 50 employee company who knows how to maintain the switches and a router, know the TCP/IP and OSI models
    • S+ - Guy who can set up a firewall, knows that an ACL isn't just a ligament in your knee.
I think you need to take a step back and figure out where the destination is first. Ask yourself...

WTF DO I WANT TO BE?
WTF DO I WANT TO DO?

You need a definitive answer, no wishy washy stuff. Reason is, you don't wanna be the CompTIA God and get A+, N+, S+ only to figure out you wanna be a Programmer. IT is so huge it really ain't a set discipline. When I was a telecom engineer the network was so vast that you could be an expert at the last mile but not know jack ish about the core and vice versa and that's within the same discipline.

So in summation be able to say "I want to be a CISSP working for a Fortune 500 company working on their security posture" I'm just making some stuff up but know that and then build your path there.

They are planning an industry insurrection.😯

Intel's chip recovery plan could restore US manufacturing prowess

The chipmaker's come-from-behind strategy is risky and will take years, even with government subsidies.

We’ll see how this plays out. The previous CEOs ran the company into the dirt. They were slow to mobile and TSMC/Samsung/Qualcomm dominate that, AMD is competing with them in the Desktop market, Apple gave them the middle finger…Intel has the brand but they have a long way to go. They are 100M behind in a race and their competitors are not going to stop running for them to catch up.

I think the secret of success is no longer in the brand, it's in the band. What I mean is the instruction set for x86 CPUs are quite dated and in serious need of an overhaul. AMD extended the x86 architecture but that was only a placeholder.

Yeah but if they invest like they are doing now and start competing again the brand cachet will be beneficial. You’ll start seeing stories about their epic rise back to prominence and how the new CEO brought them back to life. If I was making a computing device I personally wouldn’t GAF id be over there trying to link with TSMC but if they can get the tech and price right having intel in your device could be a selling point. Maybe it’s just nostalgia talking but that Intel Inside is still real to me.

You know what I was looking at when I made that point!😄

The x86 is so old and outdated that even Intel is trying to kill it. Weird, antiquated leftover mnemonics from ages ago are still present and mucking up the chip's overall efficiency. ARM was a breath of fresh air.

Oh ARM, that one company Apple helped start.

But yeah Apple is showing the power of ARM with Apple Silicon. I think from the consumer side the biggest issue is going to be emulation as the transition happens. I don’t know if I trust Microsoft to make the transition from x86 to ARM as well as Apple is doing it. They can’t even get dark mode to work consistently in Win 11.

I will most certainly keep a career path in mind (something to do with Mangement of Information Systems). Still, after reading around, most companies want people who have at least 2-5 experience years in the industry starting out (for MIS) and I feel as though that is mainly reserved for ADOS men such as myself. I reckon that getting certifications for job opportunities in IT will give me that needed experience as I pursue a further education in MIS. Also, it should put me in positions down the road where I can name the position, company and role I want to advnance my career in MIS.
Appreciate the response, setting smart goals is something that I needed to be reminded of (that I overlooked tbh).

No problem. Does your school have a dedicated MIS program? I switched out of it because it was a discipline of Business Administration.
