Kaytraminé is a new music duo featuring world-famous producer Kaytranada and Portland-born rapper Aminé. For their debut single the two artists enlisted the efforts of veteran producer Pharrell Williams who co-produced and provided vocals for the hook. "4eva" is the perfect soundtrack to a chill summer day preferably by the water, with drinks and something nice to look at. Let's examine it further...

The Hook

The song begins with Pharrell singing “that means forever” which cements the chill mood that persists throughout the entire song. During each subsequent play through of the hook there are additional processed vocals that give the song additional flavor and character. In regards to instrumentation, there is not much variation between the verse and the hook.

The Verses

Aminé flow and tone are perfect for the beat with a subject matter that doesn’t require one to think too hard. The first verse is pretty routine for Rap in that it's just a procession of bars that sound good but don't communicate anything of value aka "The Human Nature Strategy". The second verse takes a slightly different approach as Aminé focuses on his sexual prowess and how he can seduce and inevitably pleasure the woman in his sights. He drops bars such as:

“Hit it like Anderson, .paak that p***y up

Baby I'll handle it, no matter if you're with somebody new"

One gripe with the verses is that they don’t have much to do with the hook outside of a bar or two. With that said, not every Rap verse has to be profound and that goes for this track. The bars are perfectly delivered and help to keep the song fun and perfect for the summer.

The Instrumentation

The co production of "4eva" by Kaytranada and Pharrell Williams truly delights and is the perfect release for the summer. The African drum pattern that underpins everything is perfect and feel likes an exotic twist to New York deep house. On top of the drums is a mellow organ line that is hypnotizing and relaxful.

Kaytranada kept the production simple there are no major highs or lows in the song. Outside of the melody or bass line dropping off to emphasize Aminé, there are no other changes changes throughout the song until the end. At 2:18 the organ melody is accompanied by a synth and a string chord which are a good send off for the track.

Parting Thoughts

4eva featuring Pharrell Williams is great soundtrack to an upscale pool party or lounge during the summer months. It’s fun, doesn’t require too much from the listener, and is well produced. Pharrell’s vocals are restrained, smooth, and provide a good balance to Aminé. The duo is slated to release a self-titled full-length album which we are excited to hear.
