The pot smoking partners in crime Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg dropped some fire with the release of "Don’t Text Don’t Call". At first listen you may think…”this sounds just like Fat Joe - Drive ft. Ty Dolla Sign” and that’s because “Don’t Text, Don’t Call” was produced by talented music producer Ty Dolla Sign. With that said, is Wiz Khalifa - Don't Text Don't Call the BBQ and pool party anthem for 2023? Maybe...

The Hook

Wiz Khalifa starts the track off singing "don't text, don't call because I don't wanna see you tomorrow" which sounds straight out of the Ty Dolla Sign "Parts Bin". The lyrics feel very derivative and lack creativity but are saved by Khalifa's smooth delivery. That's not to say that the hook is bad, it's not, but it's not necessarily good either. It gets us from one verse to the next without issue and that's good enough.

The Verses

The verses find Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg dealing with a bust down wanting to be upgraded to the main. The bars that both rappers spit are straight-forward and don’t try to be more than what they need to be. Wiz takes the first verse with a half-Rap/half-R&B vocal style that rides the beat perfectly. In it, Wiz raps:

"You like to be the only one, don't wanna be like my other b*tch

Don't ever lie to you, I always keep it G and don't do sucker shit"

Wiz Khalifa makes it clear that he's been straight up regarding his intentions therefore she has no reason to be confused. Fellow rapper Snoop Dogg appears on the second verse of the song and gives us that G’d up flavor that makes him so iconic.

"...to bust moves Dogg Pound's what I'm reppin'
If you're not giving top get the f*ck out my section"

He makes it clear that he is about his business, is not looking for anything exclusive and that if she is not comfortable in her position then it's time for her to bounce. Neither verse is ultra-lyrical but they don’t have to be as that is not what the beat calls for.

The Breakdown

After the second hook, Snoop blesses the song with some G'd up singing:

“don’t hit my line up, heyyyyy ‘cuz I’m high”

What makes this part so epic is that it is a throw back to “What’s My Name” (da da da da heeey heheh heyy). In fact, this part would have been a much better hook than “don’t text, don’t call because I don't wanna see you tomorrow”. It matches the mellow vibe set by the beat and the spirit of P-Funk that got into Snoop really took the track to the next level.

The Production

The beat is chill, warm, and reminiscent of a sunny day in California. The singing throughout the song is handled perfectly with the auto-tune being kept to the absolute minimum.

Parting Thoughts

The song is the perfect type of music for the summer season. It pairs well with a pool party, a BBQ in the park, or a trek down the street with the top down. It's also a nice way to kick off the highly anticipated High School Reunion Tour that kicks off July 7th. Fans may wanna get their tickets asap as it will probably sell out. Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg have an incredible chemistry which makes their features a must listen for rap fans.

Now will "Don't Text, Don't Call" be something to play every day? Probably not. But when the top is down and I’m puffing a cigar it will definitely be in rotation. I give it 4 out of 6ZEROS.

I always keep it G and don't do sucker shit (Sucker shit)
You knocked me down, pick me up

'Cause I don't wanna see you tomorrow (See you tomorrow)
I don't wanna see you tomorrow (See you tomorrow)

//Verse: Snoop Dogg

Bitch, I know you ain't in love with me
If it wasn't for my Doggystyle, you wouldn't even fuck with me
Cut her off, ain't nothin' to a G
Seen that punk bitch from across the street
See, I don't mean to be disrespectful
But if you come with some bullshit, I'ma check you
Straight, get you right, and if you don't, I left you
Sittin' in the dust, 'cause I never could trust 'em
All about the paper, there's no discussion
Cup full of indigo, good kush, I'm crushin'
She a ride or die bitch, that means no question
Go rounds, back to back, like we both wrestlin'
Girl, you know where I'm from, and you know where I'm steppin'
Blessed with all styles of the game, so I'm destined
To bust moves, Dogg Pound's what I'm reppin'
If you're not givin' top, get the fuck out my section

//Chorus: Wiz Khalifa

Don't text, don't call
'Cause I don't wanna see you tomorrow (See you tomorrow)
I don't wanna see you tomorrow (See you tomorrow)
Don't text, don't call
'Cause I don't wanna see you tomorrow (See you tomorrow)
I don't wanna see you tomorrow (See you tomorrow)

//Bridge: Snoop Dogg

Don't hit my line up
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
'Cause I'm high (Yessir)
Don't hit my line up
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
'Cause I'm high

//Chorus: Wiz Khalifa
