I can explain why I have always had a natural ear for traditional West African music but this is my sound. I can translate some of the songs in the traditional languages of Bambara (Mali) and Mande (Guinea) but I still have a long way to go. In many ways, this is the sound that most of us black people here in the USA descended from (whether you all are acutely aware of this or not). This sound has also inspired my own music (Neo-Reggae - a cross between global black diaspora sounds). This is the sound of our macro-historical legacy. Makes great music for the road. Digest these two artist below if you will. Hopefully one day here in America, more foundational blacks will reconnect with the sound that they were stolen away from respectively so that we can hear more of this on the radios here. The first song is called "Baba (Dad/Father)" by Kome Dianka Diarra and the second is called "Femme de Chance (Lucky woman)" by M Balou Kante.

I'm definitely old school, classic R&B. Lately I've been listening to SADE. I also like Jazz fusion, so there is a radio station (WPFW.Org) that features Jazz on Thursday evenings --- among many other inspiring genres. Still yet I just like anything that I've heard before from the 70's - 90's.

If you have Sirius XM, try "WATERFALLS". You won't be disappointed.

Yeah it's a good Smooth Jazz station. They also have Real Jazz for people that like traditional jazz sound. Watercolors sometimes gets too watered down and generic but I still like it.

The lyrics on this one were so real.
With popular people I don't fit
They was stupid, they focus on bullshit
Now the whips they be driving is bullshit
Your pastor lie to you right from the pulpit
    Go hard or starve
    No wait on God
Give him your money? That's bullshit
