A lot of this article resonated with me but this quote in particular stood out. When a Black company bankrolled Soul Train, it allowed Soul Train to remain true to its mission. If a White company bankrolled it then that company would have meddled in the affairs and changed what Soul Train was trying to do.Johnson Products was one of the first Black-owned businesses to trade on the American stock exchange, and, as Blount Danois observes, “Soul Train was able to continue its programming with a level of autonomy that would not have been possible if it had had to rely on a national sponsor that had to cater to Southern affiliates.”
We need to keep this in mind as Black people. Even if we stay true to our mission, taking White money is a death blow to anything we are trying to do. You’ll see this pretty soon when Swiss Beats starts promoting NSync vs. Backstreet Versus.
